Gale Force
by Rachel Caine

Dear Reader,

I'm happy to report that I didn't have to read Gale Force between the fingers covering my eyes, as I had feared at the end of my review of Thin Air. Indeed, Gale Force feels like something of a return for Caine, a return to the usual fun and insanity of a Weather Warden book.

Joanne and David are getting hitched, which is no spoiler dear reader, for it's on the back cover of the book. Breathe...breathe... Naturally, their wedding planning cannot come without complications. She a Warden, he a Djinn, there are those in both camps that see the pairing as disastrous, but no more so than David's fellow Djinn, Ashan. Ashan fears that when David and Joanne exchange vows, David will commit every Djinn along with himself.

Add to this a pesky reporter intent on exposing the truth about the Wardens, a strange earthquake which hits Florida, and the discovery of a shiny black barb embedded in the earth. Why can't Djinn see it? Will Joanne have to solve the riddle without their help--and worse yet, without David's very belief in her?

Caine is back in top form with Gale Force; the Joanne/David pairing has been a delight for me since book one, and they really shine in this volume. Watching Joanne shop for wedding dresses is a bit silly, but it is a nice counterpoint to the otherwise dark tone of the book, as Caine brings back a villain that I'd been hoping to see more of. Rahel and Venna return in this book as well, and naturally Lewis is also along for the ride.

I can forgive Caine the bump that was Thin Air. The series is back on track with Gale Force; it is not to be missed.

Yours between the covers,
Lola
